Jaali is an architectural upholstery fabric made of wool, designed by Doshi Levien, which combines pattern and structure to create fascinating effects. Seen close up, it shows a fine, net-like grid of hexagonal shapes. However, when viewed from a distance, this pattern takes on a structured look.

Named after the Hindi word for net or grid, Jaali is made from two single-coloured yarns. The contrast between the lighter, colour-coordinated yarns used for the pattern and the smooth surface creates a three-dimensional play of light and shadow. Interestingly, this gives the textile both lightness and depth.

Although no direction is given, the teardrop-shaped elements of Jaali's pattern add another dimension to the design. They come together to create a subtle sense of weight and graphic movement.

Jaali is available in 20 colourways, carefully selected from 1,500 woven patterns. To develop these colours, Doshi Levien drew inspiration from the colour palette of Lila and Raas, two other textiles they have designed for Kvadrat. To complete the palette, the designers set about creating fresh neutrals with unexpected colourways.
Nipa Doshi: ‘We wanted to add colours that would give the Kvadrat collection a new touch, but without being too loud or dominant. We want people to use the colours we have designed, which is why we are introducing them slowly and subtly.’

Jaali combines particularly well with purple and raas, but also goes well with the other textiles in the Kvadrat collection. It is suitable for public and private spaces.
